Memento Mori

Anxiety, Fear, and Depression. Many people are experiencing these emotions in today’s global pandemic situation. Mental health is an important issue many people do not know about. Memento Mori is a comic book series that metaphorically illustrates all of my personal fear and anxiety.

The story of this Memento Mori involved two characters in a threatening world. They live in constant fear of how to survive. Their situation mirrors my own life inside a big city. Giants and Zombies are my favorite kind of villains in a story. They represent fearlessness and bravery which I feel that I lack. Giants stand tall without fear of the crowd. Zombies attack without hesitation grabbing all the opportunity available. I see these characteristics of bravery and confidence as essential traits for an artist.

As a kid, I told myself and my parents that I want to become an artist. Drawing comics has become my habit. Drawing all the things I imagine on a piece of paper gives me more ideas about the story I’m making. My four series project is inspired by comics and manga. The method I used to create this art piece is traditional inking which I enjoy the most while the yellow scarf I use is watercolor that gives the high contrast in the illustration. Then I used photoshop to add the gray tones and leave white areas.
