The Simple Indulgences In Life

In my work, I like to glamorize the mundane indulgences in our everyday lives. It could be something as simple as walking outside and enjoying the sunshine or curling up somewhere cozy to read a book. I see other illustrators create elaborate pieces that produce strong emotional responses, like rage or grief or triumph, but the kind of art I dream of putting out into the world is the kind that puts people at ease. Something soothing, comforting, or calming. In this series, The Simple Indulgences In Life, I wanted to convey how simple moments like these remind us of what nurtures and sustains us in life. If we don’t try to appreciate the little things, we start to get lost in the bigger things, like tragedies around the world that we are unable to stop. Without these small moments, life seems overwhelming. Moreover, not everyone in the world is able to experience these simple indulgences, so it can be easy to become immune to them ourselves. Reading a good book, listening to your favourite music, jumping in rain puddles, cuddling with your pets–these all seem like such mundane escapisms. Yet these are the moments that allow you to find enjoyment anywhere you look instead of making you experience fleeting moments of happiness when you memorialize only the “big” moments in life.
