Frozen – A Series of 4

Frozen is a series of illustrations highlighting the rapid change in polar animal habitats. In particular, it showcases arctic animals whose homes are being negatively affected by melting ice caps. It is an expression of shape, colour and design reflecting the ongoing climate crisis and creatures that live on our planet.

Inspired by my love of film and animation, I tried to use a variety of shapes and colours to bring each piece to life. This series began as a series of linear concept sketches for digital illustrations. As I began to add value and create a sense of depth, I tried experiments using some of my favourite traditional media instead. I ended up making the entire series with layered paper and a little gouache.

People have described my style as cute and comforting, like a cozy evening or cup of tea. With this series, I wanted to explore what would be the opposite of that. I wanted to showcase these beautiful and adorable animals but also the beauty of the world around us. Northern animals are unable to adapt as quickly as their climate is changing. As a result, they lose their homes and struggle to find food and shelter. The idea that 100 years from today polar bears may not exist on this planet because we as humans could not address climate change quickly enough, is absolutely terrifying. I hope these illustrations can resonate with someone the way they do with me.
