Adventures in Folklore

In my series, Adventures in Folklore, I address the oral traditions and folklore that were once told in the Caribbean (Barbados). The art of the oral tradition is a dying practice. As the world continues to modernize itself; the old traditions and customs are an afterthought. The younger generation will become alien to these stories by the mere fact that we are not telling them nor remembering who we are.

In my re-imagining of these stories, I attempt to bring back Bajan folklore into the present in the form of children’s Illustration. The four pieces depict history, humour, and Bajan culture, these four pieces center around the folklore of; The Heartman, The Steel Donkey, The Obeah Woman and the Duppy. The style of my illustrations is targeted towards a children’s audience using digitally created images printed on canvas. With this series of children’s illustrations, I hope to help people understand that we don’t have to throw out the old traditions. These are building blocks to our future. My series of illustrations offers an entertaining link between past and present.
