Isolation

For my Illustrated series, I decided to explore the theme and struggles of prolonged isolation, In reference to the past couple of years during the pandemic so many people have experienced isolation. I collected retellings from those close to me on how they felt throughout this time. Each piece represents a part that I found to be the most common feelings found from prolonged Isolation; Loneliness, Depression, Disassociation, and an intense sense of Longing.

I want to make illustrations based on hearing these stories that convey these different experiences in a way that is connected through isolation, and yet shows distinct differences. In the illustrated series I used the same room as my visual foundation and built around this with distinct colours, settings, and gestures. The choices are based on how the people felt during this period. I want the colours to be different from one another and yet recognizable for what the emotion might be. The environments appear rough and unsure to show what the outside feels like now. Rather than what it truly is. The gestures of the person locked away in their room, change to show their state of mind; whether it be curled up in a corner feeling helpless or perched at a window just waiting to leave. Using perspective and colour, without words, to help make the feelings visible.

Loneliness; even with a light of hope we are not alone, either through online connection or in person, the feeling is unshakable. Depression; the beautiful day is awaiting even within this isolation, yet nothing matters anymore to get up and go for it. Dissociation; the only escape some can muster at that point. Leaving reality through your mind into a false reality that will provide the longed for adventure. Longing; missing what you had, what you might have had. Only the view and thoughts being the memories you can form.

In my illustrated series, Isolation, I want to convey to viewers the sense and understanding that the pandemic has had on so many people, in separate ways. If this work can help someone feel that although it may have been hard, they aren’t alone in this struggle. I hope my work can help with exploring the feeling and affects of prolonged isolation by touching on Loneliness, Depression, Disassociation, and Longing.
