Existence

A couple of years ago, I faced a near-death situation. I was immersed in a different dimension of existence for several days, and upon my return, I found myself navigating a surreal blend of realities. I remember lying in the hospital bed, with the outlines of doctors’ silhouettes hovering over me. As I opened my eyes, I saw peculiar symmetrical shapes that seemed to resemble evil faces or masks. But strangely, instead of fear, I felt a profound sense of being alive.

That experience made me realize that existence itself is not just a mere journey, but a dance. The ultimate goal is not to simply reach an end, but to revel in the very act of dancing itself. This revelation led me to draw upon the traditional Bolivian dance called “diablada” as my muse for depicting these shapes. In this vibrant dance, the devil, the maiden, the angel, and the bear come together in a joyous portrayal of the eternal battle between good and evil. It’s associated with carnival times and celebrations, and it evokes those same feelings within me.

I believe that each of us experiences the world in a unique way. And I hope my art can inspire others to explore their own perceptions of reality and to embrace the beauty of existence.
