Artist Statement
Sarah Lau is an Asian Canadian artist living in Toronto and was born in Singapore. Her interests are in visual dev, creating comics and design 2D game art concepts. Her early childhood was filled with old shop trips, nature walks, ghost stories or memories of her family relocating and her switching schools. Due to these experiences, her stories contain themes of travel or being spirited away. Her colorful characters have a whimsical feel and live in intricate worlds that show connection with nature, spirits and humans. Her artwork is inspired by pixel games, Eastern animated films such as Studio Ghibli, Legend of Hei and Asian folklore tales.
Her art are a mix media – between traditional watercolor paintings, handcrafted diorama and digital illustrations. Her artistic aim is to allow viewers to find the symbolism and themes within or even resonant with the topics that she brings to the public or online.
