TO YU, HI! (Yuhi-Japanese for Sunset)

“To Yu, Hi!” is a series that depicts the process of healing with oneself through nature and time. The title plays off the Japanese word for Sunset ,Yuhi, and encompasses my cultural identities, my artistic brand, and my memories.

See the world in my memories through rose colored glasses as I paint Peruvian landscapes on each of these five vases. Each vase differs from one another yet the warmth and beauty that each vase demonstrates encompasses what nature holds for us in the stillness of time: beauty and wonder. Five vases for five different times of day: Dawn, Day, Sunset, Dusk, and Night. This symbolizes the passing of time and that we as an individual heal with time. I want you to take a moment in time to be one with nature to feel what I felt: warmth. I use a Japanese aspect to the vases: the artistry of Kintsugi. It is the art of breaking ceramics then gluing them back together with golden resin lacquer. This depicts the beauty in the process of healing oneself, not just by time but by effort, and ultimately coming out stronger. “To Yu, Hi” is a love letter to myself and more so for you that says one thing only: You’re here now, keep going!
