Bleeding Tulips

Women have been suffering enormously in Iran as a result of unjust authorities forcing them to wear hijab. Authorities have been trying to shut down women’s voices, however, the strong women of Iran have pushed back and created challenges for the authorities. Women’s movement to defy the hijab mandate reminded authorities as well the world that this is not a matter of clothing but rather a violation of women’s rights. The recent courageous movement led by women in Iran created unity and a pillar of strength amongst women in Iran and worldwide. Women in Iran continue to stand firm in their demand for their rights while supporting each other.

In the Iranian culture, red tulip flowers symbolize the sacrifice of a martyr’s blood and the power of love. Now these flowers also represent the loss of women’s lives dictated by the oppressive authorities in Iran. These women lost their lives to make sure other women could have their freedom of choice including having a choice to wear the clothing of their choice and show their hair if they decide. In the face of every loss, women became even more determined to fight the battle against the authorities. These pieces are in solidarity with women fighting for their rights in Iran.
