Artist Statement

Bittersweet

This collection shows the artist’s childhood memories through the exploration of old family albums, from the joy and safety that comes with being with her mother and father, to toys that serve as a reminder of the closeness she shares with her older brother. Each shot, frozen in time, is a warm, familiar moment shared with core family. The essence of childhood is deeply woven into the psychological development and formation of each one’s individuality, and is a period of time that can never be fully recovered or reconstructed outside the bounds of where it belongs, the past.

The attempt of grappling at half-gone memories of the years past, and recreation of a long lost feeling through portraiture is the resource she has found in order to manifest what is left of the fleeting, an effort at connecting unknown people to a universally known experience, whether it be nostalgic or melancholic. This vision has been accomplished through the use of acrylic paint on wooden board canvas. The juxtaposed figures on a flat, neutral coloured background, serves as a reminder that these are nothing more than ephemeral and distant memories, lacking of entirety, a collage of fragments of what remains in the past.
